I watched this movie last night and I was so confused by it after watching it. I dont know what I expected but it wasnt this. The first bit that properly shocked me was the elders suicide - I had to look away when his head was smashed with the hammer, it made me feel sick. Then when Dani is dreaming, seeing Marks face laughing at her through the car REALLY creeped me out. Im not sure why it did - but he just has such a creepy face, and as he didnt even want Dani there in the first place it felt all too real and creeped me out. I also had to look away seeing Simon in the bird house, that was freaking me out. I think he was turned into a blood eagle? But the end scene I had to watch with my dad after seeing Christian put into the bear. Its horrifying to know that he wouldve boiled alive in silence, not able to move or even scream. Just feel the pain. Dani smiling at the end was creepy, showing she had succumbed to the cult and had her new family. All in all it was a good film. But it was so shocking. It wasnt scary, it was just disturbing. I recommend it to anybody who hasnt seen it, but youll need a strong stomach.

should go in with an open mind. It's a movie going experience that is very difficult to describe. Ari Aster film delivers on being very disturbing and gruesome but suffers from major pacing issues.
The good: the cinematography, acting, colors and music are nearly flawless. It is one of the most technically stunning films you will see. The music makes the film all the more unsettling at times and the camera shots can linger for so long it begins to make you nervous. The acting is solid specifically from Pugh. Will Poulter is funny at times and intentionally annoying as almost all his characters are. If you were expecting hereditary part 2, you may want to reconsider.
While this film just gets crazier and crazier as it goes, it can be hard to forget that this story is Dani's and that's where you will find what this movie is truly about. It's about an unstable relationship that decays and eventually explodes and forces a new cycle of self-discovery. You will probably need to read articles or watch videos on this movie when you come out like I did.
Now on to the issues. This movie is long. And I enjoy long movies. Hereditary was perfectly paced but there are numerous scenes in this movie that could be trimmed down or cut. People will say it adds to the movie as a whole but some don't. Also, there are supposed to be some genuinely unsettling scenes but almost everyone in the theater burst out laughing. Nudity can be a hard thing to take seriously when it's showed like this, but I understand that some pagan rituals actually do that, so i understand where it's coming from. While the climax is far from as unforgettable as hereditary, the story does come full circle and will leave you with an unsettling final shot.
Overall, Aster's sophomore film doesn't reach the heights of hereditary, but still provides much of what people loved about that movie. You will most likely walk out of the theater thinking wtf did I just watch, but that's the point. It's a film that requires multiple viewings and some research to truly appreciate. Go see it to form your own opinion though because this could end up being more divisive than hereditary.

My problem with the story as a whole is the fact that, the villagers are so easy to see the outsiders as evil when in truth they either don't understand the rituals or in Josh and Christian's cases in the begining are trying to. On top of that, the villagers see the outsiders as evil to be purged but they THEMSELVES are evil as a whole. The villagers use religion as excuse to kill while top of it commit A WHOLE BUNCH OF OTHER SINS on their own. The villagers lie, cheat, manipulate use way too much drugs for their own good, use sex to get what they want, sacrifice their elderly, ALMOST commit child sacrifice, capture, cage and then MUTILATE a bear and even purposely induce incest to create their oricle. If Dani had any last bit of teeny-tiny sense, she should've burn the whole village down with herself included.

There's a whole 30 minute beginning involving Pugh's character that's basically irrelevant to the main plot although I'm sure the director uses it as a reason for her to hang around when anyone else with any sense would leave.
This is one of those frustrating movies where you keep hoping the heroes come to their senses and get some payback on the evil doers. But it never happens.
It's also one of those movies where in real life the characters would have been long gone the minute after the first violent scene rather then hanging around.
